Last day in Thailand and we finally made it to the Great Palace, which is not such a bad place to fill the head with 'Thainess'. It's quite overwhelming really, every square centimeter is adorned with jewels, gold, tiling ... I realise that taking photos is quite handy for focussing on it piece by piece!
Back in BKK, staying on the Khao San road, otherwise known as backpacker central - which is better than sex tourism central and good for last minute gift shopping. I feel a little old here, everyone looks about 18 and, as I head to bed, are just starting out on their first buckets, yes buckets, of rhum.
Mirna and Laure happened to be in Thailand at the same time as us, so we caught them for a couple of days which was great fun. We left them sprawled on the beach and regretfully headed back up to Bangkok.
Day trip to Ko Phi Phi today - and yes, we went snorkelling where 'The Beach' was filmed - it had to be done. I have never seen water like it - so clear and clean, you could see 4 metres down. Unbelievable. I'm glad we decided to stay in Koh Lanta though, less beautiful but, logically, less packed.
Met some elephants today. I'd been dying to ride one before coming to Thailand despite it being a bit of tourist cliché. We went one better and actually swam on the back of one - completely cool!
Send me a message : What animal is this?
Koh Lanta old town today - parts of it seem not to have changed in a hundred years, with wooden fishermen cottages perched over the water. It's a little more rundown than the rest of the island which actually makes a nice change.
We've landed on Koh Lanta for the next ten days - it was difficult to decide which of the hundreds of islands to head for but we're not regretting it so far. Koh Lanta lacks the awesome limestone outcrops of other islands but is peppered with impressively long beaches with crystal clear water - and the atmosphere is decidedly relaxed.
Boys after my heart - except perhaps the one in Blue as he was wearing a Chelsea shirt
I'll try not to post too many sunset images... but this fishing boy was too perfect to resist. I am still suspecting he may have been paid to fish through the sunset!
Breakfast on the beach works too...
Dinner spot. All the beach bars and restaurants are so tastefully decorated and lit, it puts our Euro beaches - where beach bar usually rhymes with kitsch - to shame.
Hong Island - stunning!
