Beautiful day! I dragged Angie's carcass down to the center for coffee - Zebra Bar - it also features on the 'World's Best Bars' website but you need to enter your date of birth to get on the site which is weird and, besides, I think that's a little over the top! It's a nice place but any bar on any beach in Thailand tops it (would that make for a really repetitive website I wonder?). Wandered around and later fed ourselves at Al Jannah, delicious lebanese place in the Marolles area (just by the photographed church) - the guy sitting next to us was really loud & obnoxious though - I'm sure that's not always the case... As for the very large new ad on Avenue de la Toison d'Or, at the risk of sounding ancient, I'm a little perplexed! ... but, more importantly, I think it means that an A&C must be opening in Brussels sometime soon - North Americans previously had to travel to Antwerp to stock up.

September 10 2011

Woke up in a teepee! Laurie's parents in law have a couple of yurts and a teepee which they let to holidaymakers in the summer and kindly let us crash in them for the weekend. Amazing - I discovered that dry toilets are really quite handy and that sleeping on camping mats works wonders for my back. Had coffee in the nearest 'big' village where we found Daniel & Sandrine who had picked up a lavish breakfast. Headed over to the festival where we lay in the shade sipping on fresh juices. Zafir needed a snore so we headed back to the yurts, made a fire in the pit, grilled some pig, potatoes and courgettes and didn't leave. It's amazing how rare the simpler pleasures are in a city - sitting round a fire, under the stars and chatting. Medecine for the soul.

September 9 2011

It seemed like the 9th of September would be a good place to regroup and restart the daily blogging. It so happens I was saying a final goodbye to the summer in the Trièves, a rural/mountainous region of France, not too far from Grenoble. it's an incredible place - people move there from across France to make the most of the chilled out, creative, eco friendly vibe. My friend Laurie lives there and is part of an org that puts on a festival every year so we decided to check it out. Started the day with a hike up to a nice viewpoint, picked up Robin (an old school friend I hadn't seen in 15 years!) and headed over to the festival - good music, great vibes, tasty food and organic beer! Daniel & Sandrine pitched up from Provence in the evening with their little Zafir.

Summer 2011

Here we go - three months of silence on the daily blogging front means some images are very much overdue. It would take me until next September to sort shots into the correct days and find images for those days when I simply lay in the sun and did nothing (or the lying in the couch when avoiding the rain when I was in Belgium).  Instead, I have thrown a few images in a vaguely random order into a slideshow format - as sort of 'this is the summer that was...' with some holidaying and some commissioned stuff. In the meantime, I have also added a new portfolio gallery from a trip to Cape Town's schools.

I once decided that rain + sun was my favorite weather - at the time I was waiting for a friend in front of the Pompidou centre in Paris and it happened to fit the place, the vibe and my mood perfectly. Since then, I'm always vaguely excited when I witness that combo, but it's never been quite as right - until these last few days in brussels, when we're being 'spoilt'. It's a constant vestimentary dance (sunglasses on, rainjacket off, rainkacket on, sunglasses off) and sitting on a terrace enjoying a beer one minute and rushing inside for comfort the next... I love how it seems to wake the city up - the rain staining everything a darker shade, under blue skies. Other than that, henri, marie L and Luc over for dinner; I made spinach and ricotta lasagna.

June 18 2011

I liked today a lot. Weird weather - pissing with rain one minute, bright sun the next which makes timing stepping outside a bit of a challenge. Biked to Longchamp swimming pool with Angie, swam, biked back via the nicer back roads. Picked up dinner at the Mont Liban which is just down the road from my old flat. I used to pick food up there all the time, so it was a bit of a nostalgia hit. Henri came by in the evening to play risk (angie won, grrr) and some german card game about beans (I won, hehe).

Father's birthday today but he doesn't really to celebrate so I'll leave it at that! I was hired to shoot an image of Brussels which contained belgian flags... slightly odd request but good fun and this ended up being my pick... the spire of the town hall is pretty recognisable and symbolic around these parts. Friday at last - the evening plan was cleaning, but that didn't really happen - watched a crap film instead.

June 3 2011

Wedding day... Mairie de Calvi - I was a proud witness, which, honour aside, meant I had a seat and could rest my heel-toting-feet. Drinks at Notre Dâme de la Serra, bright sunshine, champagne, pretty people... and then on to the villa, looking out on the mountains and valley below. Small storm drama - the electricity went out briefly, the dinner tent dripped, pool side cocktail was moved inside but the atmosphere didn't suffer and the weather cleared up for dinner and a long night of dancing (swapped the heels for havaians asap!). Too many shots to edit ruthlessly and it's my blog so I'll post lots if I want to!

May 30 2011

So Corsica it is... arrived in Calvi under a blazing sun. Henri picked us up and we headed to our home for the next week which is a symbol of how posh we've become... flat screens in every room, cleaning service every morning, croissants delivered to our doorstep, swimming pool, outdoor bbq... not too shabby. Lay around the pool for a bit, catching up with some of my favorite people, watched some tennis... general chill. Petanque and Pastis in the evening if just to highlight that this is indeed the South (expect a few photos a day...lovely light here) 1969 - John Lennon marries Yoko Ono

March 24 2011

Kate came over this morning with a bunch of lithographs belonging to JMI for me to shoot - quite a fun challenge as it turned out. We ate on the terrace, in the shade unfortunatley (sun on terrace hours at present: 14h-17h... for anyone planning a drop-in). I helped her carry the prints back to her office and shot a few frames from little terrace there. Dinner at Mano a Mano with Angele, Colin, Angie and Gerard (who I met for the first time). Stuffed.

March 20 2011

Muscle ache - yesterday was the first wedding of the year and they tend to be the longest shoots so my guess is that I have some specific leg muscle which I only use for photography :). I'll investigate!Another beautiful day - met up with the Jammin' Troopers at the canal (not a tourist destination-style canal!) to shoot some promo images of them. 8 members - quite a challenge! All attractive though, which helps. Met up with Matthew & Alessandro at Walvis for a couple of beers before heading home to watch the stupidest film in history (so stupid I can't even remember the name, but don't watch it). This day is the midpoint of the common year. There are 182 days before and 182 days after in common years and 183 before and 182 after in leap years. It is also my mother's birthday.
