Imagine Festival started today. 10 Belgian finalists took to the stage to fight it out for two spots in the International final tomorrow. A much busier and entertaining day - nice to see all the young musicians again - really sweet, full of energy and excitement. I was sad they couldn't all make it through but I think it was a fair win for Lunar Rays and Ziggy (my bet from the off!). Crawled home around 1230.
Took the parents over during the quiet time (middle of the day) so they could have a peek. They seemed pleased so that's good! Lunch at the Bota café and then some not very interesting hanging around. They're exhausted coming off the back of a really busy period so walked home in the early evening to catch some zzzs. Nadya is in town for work and dropped by, followed by Alessandro, Cristina and Carlo - drank, ate and hung at the Bota café (it's my local for the next few days). Off to Marie H's for her leaving do (she's escaping to Luxembourg of all places, grrrr) - bit knackered so didn't stay too long but nice to see a few faces.
The All Styles Welcome exhibition is officially on. Phew. I never thought that the Belgian sun would be an issue, but it's incredibly hot in the space which makes it quite difficult to linger... I'm selfishly wishing for rain. Opening this evening which was cool - nice to see people making the effort to head over and Samah even hooked me up with champagne. So far so good. Parents arrived at Gare du Midi around 1030 so grabbed them and headed off for a late supper at Le Comptoir - Ilia was with us, in town for a few short hours only.
12 hours of mounting on the hottest day of the year in what is essentially a greenhouse. 12 hours. That's an hour per board! Bordering on nightmarish. But it's up, it's ready, we're exhausted and M deserves a medal (or two). Don't expect much variety over the next few days since I'll basically be holding fort in the greenhouse most of the time.
Pretty much took the day off today... hanging out on my computer, answering a few mails, watching series, stuffing my face on angie-baked-cake (a masterpiece!). So here's a shot of the Botanique so I can start the promoting for my exhibition which will be held there from the 29th of June... main viewing day on the 1st of July, which coincides with the Imagine national final. Press release for expo here and Imagine Festival info here.
Dropped Lucy off at Marie's because I had to go and shoot the last Imagine Festival date - the francophone final at Flagey's Studio 4. Since I followed all the preselection rounds, I have my secret favorites now which is partly down to the music they play and partly down to how likeable they are :). It's always good fun though and there was a good crowd. I'm mostly backstage observing the nerves mounting... and the cans of coke draining. Suarez (popular Belgian band - although not so Belgian, three brothers from Madagascar and one Belgo-Italo-Spaniard) opened up as 'surprise guests' (photo of Suarez since I'm keeping Imagine under wraps for now). Drink at Belga and dinner at L'Amour Fou (classique combo).
Flemish final of the Imagine festival in Kortrijk today. Some serious talent - Ruth, pictured, was one of my favorites - great voice, great songs. Angie home from Vienna when I got back, which is nice.
Semi-final of the Imagine festival at Mons - really good fun, the standard was pretty high compared to the other semi finals and the band members were all very sweet. Shot of Spirit Burns member warming up - the band qualified for the final. Still sunny in Belgium, something is not quite right.
Two members of Salad Bar relaxing backstage after performing at the Imagine festival selection rounds in Braine l'Alleud. These were my favorites - really sweet boys and Radiohead inspired tunes... I was so hoping they would make it through to the finals but they didn't :(
In Schoten (near Antwerp) today to shoot one the Flemish preselection rounds for the Imagine festival. Some great talent, although my favorite band didn't make it through to the finals sadly. Noemi's bro Giuliano as well as Mirna and Rico were in town so met up with them, Arthur, the Maries, Luc and baby Melodi at La Maison du Peuple for drinks. Marie and Luc introduced us to the best eat-in pizza I've had in Brussels - Posto al Sole (blog I'm linking it does it better justice!) - definitely the tip of the week.
